How can the behaviour of the face plate component in tension be predicted in I-beam to concrete-filled tubular column steel joints?
This study proposes a 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 to describe the nonlinear behaviour of the face plate component, validated through experimental tests and finite element analyses. The results show that a 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 can accurately capture the full force–displacement response of the component for different connection configurations.

The second meeting of the CEN/TC250/SC3 Ad-hoc Group on AI Design of Steel Structures took place on 26 February 2026 in Barcelona, hosted by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

This initiative brings together leading experts from across Europe to explore how Artificial Intelligence can support the future development of Eurocode 3, helping enable AI-assisted structural design that is reliable, transparent, and scientifically sound.

The University of Coimbra/ISISE played an active role in the meeting, represented by:
• Filip Ljubinković, Assistant Researcher – Convenor of the Ad-hoc Group
• Luís Simões da Silva, Professor – Leader of Task Group 2 (Data)
• Aleksa Miličević, PhD Candidate – who presented his research on Physics-Informed Neural Networks for structural engineering applications

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the latest progress of the group and continue the work launched at the kick-off meeting held in Coimbra in October 2025.

Five Task Groups (TGs) are currently working on key aspects of the AI lifecycle in structural design:
🔹 TG1 – When and why AI?
🔹 TG2 – Data
🔹 TG3 – AI Model Development
🔹 TG4 – Verification and Validation
🔹 TG5 – Agentic EC3

Together, these groups aim to establish the scientific foundations and methodological framework needed to integrate AI into future generations of Eurocode 3.

📍 The next meeting of the Ad-hoc Group will take place on 1 October 2026 in Salerno, Italy, continuing the collaborative effort to shape the future of digital and AI-supported structural engineering in Europe.

🔎 Call for Expressions of Interest | Research Grant (Civil Engineering)

Within the R&D project “REFINED – Refractory Engineering for Innovative and knowledge-based lining design” (ref. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00743400), funded by Programa Inovação e Transição Digital (COMPETE2030), we are collecting expressions of interest for 1 (one) research grant in Civil Engineering or related fields.
REFINED aims to revolutionize sustainable refractory lining design in steel production by combining advanced constitutive models, AI, and optimization algorithms—supporting higher performance, fewer process interruptions, and improved competitiveness.

Planned work:
• Compilation of experimental and in situ databases on the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory masonry (steel ladles)
• Development and validation of finite element models for thermomechanical performance
• Application of advanced statistical methods (incl. sensitivity analyses and algorithm comparisons)
• Development of predictive applications for steel ladle thermomechanical behaviour

✅ Eligibility: Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (or related fields)
At this stage, we are only collecting expressions of interest. Based on submissions, suitable profiles will be identified and a formal call will be launched later. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to submit a full application to the official competition.
