This scientific contribution addresses ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ข๐ซ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฌ โa concept that has been around for more than a century, but until now without a clear design framework. ๐ In this study, a ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ for I-girders stiffened along the ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ is provided, based on a comprehensive experimental and numerical investigation. The A&V Cluster of ISISE - Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering had the pleasure of welcoming Franรงois-Xavier Bรฉcot, from MATELYS - Research Lab, on the occasion of a visit dedicated to the installation of equipment relevant to the analysis and development of acoustic absorbing materials.
This important step contributes to strengthening the Clusterโs experimental and research capacity in the field of acoustics, supporting ongoing work on material characterization and the development of advanced acoustic solutions.
The visit also provided a valuable opportunity for scientific and technical exchange, further reinforcing the connection between research institutions and industrial expertise.

The second meeting of the CEN/TC250/SC3 Ad-hoc Group on AI Design of Steel Structures took place on 26 February 2026 in Barcelona, hosted by the Universitat Politรจcnica de Catalunya.
This initiative brings together leading experts from across Europe to explore how Artificial Intelligence can support the future development of Eurocode 3, helping enable AI-assisted structural design that is reliable, transparent, and scientifically sound.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the latest progress of the group and continue the work launched at the kick-off meeting held in Coimbra in October 2025.
Five Task Groups (TGs) are currently working on key aspects of the AI lifecycle in structural design: ๐น TG1 โ When and why AI? ๐น TG2 โ Data ๐น TG3 โ AI Model Development ๐น TG4 โ Verification and Validation ๐น TG5 โ Agentic EC3
Together, these groups aim to establish the scientific foundations and methodological framework needed to integrate AI into future generations of Eurocode 3.

Within the R&D project โREFINED โ Refractory Engineering for Innovative and knowledge-based lining designโ (ref. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00743400), funded by Programa Inovaรงรฃo e Transiรงรฃo Digital (COMPETE2030), we are collecting expressions of interest for 1 (one) research grant in Civil Engineering or related fields.
REFINED aims to revolutionize sustainable refractory lining design in steel production by combining advanced constitutive models, AI, and optimization algorithmsโsupporting higher performance, fewer process interruptions, and improved competitiveness.
Planned work:
โข Compilation of experimental and in situ databases on the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory masonry (steel ladles)
โข Development and validation of finite element models for thermomechanical performance
โข Application of advanced statistical methods (incl. sensitivity analyses and algorithm comparisons)
โข Development of predictive applications for steel ladle thermomechanical behaviour
โ Eligibility: Masterโs degree in Civil Engineering (or related fields)
At this stage, we are only collecting expressions of interest. Based on submissions, suitable profiles will be identified and a formal call will be launched later. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to submit a full application to the official competition.

The second meeting of the CEN/TC250/SC3 Ad-hoc Group on AI Design of Steel Structures took place on 26 February 2026 in Barcelona, hosted by the Universitat Politรจcnica de Catalunya.
This initiative brings together leading experts from across Europe to explore how Artificial Intelligence can support the future development of Eurocode 3, helping enable AI-assisted structural design that is reliable, transparent, and scientifically sound.
The University of Coimbra/ISISE played an active role in the meeting, represented by:

โข Luรญs Simรตes da Silva, Professor โ Leader of Task Group 2 (Data)
โข Aleksa Miliฤeviฤ, PhD Candidate โ who presented his research on Physics-Informed Neural Networks for structural engineering applications
The meeting provided an opportunity to review the latest progress of the group and continue the work launched at the kick-off meeting held in Coimbra in October 2025.
Five Task Groups (TGs) are currently working on key aspects of the AI lifecycle in structural design:

๐น TG4 โ Verification and Validation
๐น TG5 โ Agentic EC3
Together, these groups aim to establish the scientific foundations and methodological framework needed to integrate AI into future generations of Eurocode 3.
๐ The next meeting of the Ad-hoc Group will take place on 1 October 2026 in Salerno, Italy, continuing the collaborative effort to shape the future of digital and AI-supported structural engineering in Europe.
