Call for Expressions of Interest โ 3 research grants in EcoBEAM
Are you interested in sustainable structural engineering and steelโtimber composite systems?
As part of the R&D project โEcoBEAM โ Development of innovative composite beam solutions, with a focus on sustainabilityโ (ref. NORTE2030-FEDER-01432600, funded by the Regional Operational Program of the North โ NORTE2030), we plan to open three research grants in Civil Engineering and related fields.
We are now collecting expressions of interest from potential candidates for three positions: ๐น Position 1 โ Experimental and Numerical Behaviour of SteelโCLT Composite Beams Laboratory testing of materials, connectors and composite beam specimens, data processing, and advanced finite element modelling of steelโCLT composite beams and their connections. ๐น Position 2 โ Analytical Modelling and Structural Optimisation Development of simplified structural models, multi-objective optimisation strategies (e.g. genetic algorithms, swarm optimisation) and calculation modules for optimal beam configurations. ๐น Position 3 โ Life-Cycle Assessment and Sustainability of EcoBEAM Solutions Life-cycle inventory, LCA/LCC studies, and integration of sustainability indicators into optimisation and decision-support tools, comparing EcoBEAM with conventional solutions.
โ Eligibility: Masterโs degree in Civil Engineering or related fields.

Call for Expressions of Interest โ 3 research grants in EcoBEAM
Are you interested in sustainable structural engineering and steelโtimber composite systems?
As part of the R&D project โEcoBEAM โ Development of innovative composite beam solutions, with a focus on sustainabilityโ (ref. NORTE2030-FEDER-01432600, funded by the Regional Operational Program of the North โ NORTE2030), we plan to open three research grants in Civil Engineering and related fields.
We are now collecting expressions of interest from potential candidates for three positions:
๐น Position 1 โ Experimental and Numerical Behaviour of SteelโCLT Composite Beams
Laboratory testing of materials, connectors and composite beam specimens, data processing, and advanced finite element modelling of steelโCLT composite beams and their connections.
๐น Position 2 โ Analytical Modelling and Structural Optimisation
Development of simplified structural models, multi-objective optimisation strategies (e.g. genetic algorithms, swarm optimisation) and calculation modules for optimal beam configurations.
๐น Position 3 โ Life-Cycle Assessment and Sustainability of EcoBEAM Solutions
Life-cycle inventory, LCA/LCC studies, and integration of sustainability indicators into optimisation and decision-support tools, comparing EcoBEAM with conventional solutions.
โ Eligibility: Masterโs degree in Civil Engineering or related fields.
At this stage, we are only collecting expressions of interest. Based on the submitted information, the most suitable profiles will be identified, and formal calls for the three research grants will be launched later. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a full application to the official competitions.

How can Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) simulations be adjusted for timber and wood composite structures?
This study identifies the optimal CDP parameters for ๐ฐ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฌ, improving the accuracy of structural behavior predictions. By calibrating the expansion angle, strength ratio, shape factor, and viscosity, the study reduced errors in predicting breaking loads from over 50% (using concrete parameters) to just 8.5%, providing a reliable tool for simulations of wooden structures under static and fire conditions.
