The A&V Cluster of ISISE - Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering had the pleasure of welcoming Franรงois-Xavier Bรฉcot, from MATELYS - Research Lab, on the occasion of a visit dedicated to the installation of equipment relevant to the analysis and development of acoustic absorbing materials.

How can the behaviour of the face plate component in tension be predicted in I-beam to concrete-filled tubular column steel joints?
This study proposes a ๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ž๐ฅ to describe the nonlinear behaviour of the face plate component, validated through experimental tests and finite element analyses. The results show that a ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐›๐ž๐š๐ฆ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ž๐ฅ ๐จ๐ง ๐š๐ง ๐ž๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง can accurately capture the full forceโ€“displacement response of the component for different connection configurations.

The second meeting of the CEN/TC250/SC3 Ad-hoc Group on AI Design of Steel Structures took place on 26 February 2026 in Barcelona, hosted by the Universitat Politรจcnica de Catalunya.

This initiative brings together leading experts from across Europe to explore how Artificial Intelligence can support the future development of Eurocode 3, helping enable AI-assisted structural design that is reliable, transparent, and scientifically sound.

The University of Coimbra/ISISE played an active role in the meeting, represented by:

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the latest progress of the group and continue the work launched at the kick-off meeting held in Coimbra in October 2025.

Five Task Groups (TGs) are currently working on key aspects of the AI lifecycle in structural design:

Within the R&D project โ€œREFINED โ€“ Refractory Engineering for Innovative and knowledge-based lining designโ€ (ref. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00743400), funded by Programa Inovaรงรฃo e Transiรงรฃo Digital (COMPETE2030), we are collecting expressions of interest for 1 (one) research grant in Civil Engineering or related fields.
REFINED aims to revolutionize sustainable refractory lining design in steel production by combining advanced constitutive models, AI, and optimization algorithmsโ€”supporting higher performance, fewer process interruptions, and improved competitiveness.

Planned work:
โ€ข Compilation of experimental and in situ databases on the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory masonry (steel ladles)
โ€ข Development and validation of finite element models for thermomechanical performance
โ€ข Application of advanced statistical methods (incl. sensitivity analyses and algorithm comparisons)
โ€ข Development of predictive applications for steel ladle thermomechanical behaviour

โœ… Eligibility: Masterโ€™s degree in Civil Engineering (or related fields)
At this stage, we are only collecting expressions of interest. Based on submissions, suitable profiles will be identified and a formal call will be launched later. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to submit a full application to the official competition.
